Adopt A Farmer

Meet us. . .

Hi, we are Dean and Carol Coleman, yes this is Farmer Dean! We love having Mike and his family farming with us. We have been farming for a long time and really enjoy it. I am a director for the Iowa Soybean Board and we attend the Methodist Church here in Humboldt. We can't wait to spend more time with you kids on the farm in a few weeks.
Hello, I am Farmer Mike and this is my family. Michelle, Spencer (age 7) and Addison (age 5) and Katleyn (10 months) all doing their part in helping things run smoothly. We farm with my Dad and Mom. Spencer attend first grade at Taft this year. Addie went to preschool at Kings Kids. I am on the Farm Bureau board of directors and on the board for Midland Cooperative (electric cooperative board).

Together we raise corn and soybeans and we live four miles west of the high school.
What we grow:
Let’s talk about
SOYBEANS:
One soybean is called a seed
The soybean is planted 1- 1 1/2 inches deep
Soybeans - planted 3 inches apart in 15"rows
Soybeans grow in a pod with 3-4 seeds
These pods grow in cluster
The pods grow on a bush about 3 feet tall
CORN:
One piece of corn is called a “kernel” of corn
A kernel is planted into the ground 2” deep
The kernels are planted 6” apart & put in rows
Kernels grow on a cob that grow on a stalk
Each cob has about 800 kernels on it
Corn grows about 8 feet tall
